[Results] MAFF Side Event at UNCCD COP17

Sustainable land management is attracting attention as a nexus that contributes to climate change action and biodiversity conservation. Conserving agricultural soils is a global challenge, and responses to soil degradation and drought are being discussed at UNCCD COP17.

The event introduced Japanese technologies and approaches and shared pathways and challenges for sustainable land management through collaboration among government, industry, academia, and international organizations.

The panel discussion deepened understanding of pathways and challenges for achieving sustainable land management through collaboration among government, industry, academia, and international organizations.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries stated that it will continue contributing to the international promotion of regenerative agriculture and sustainable land management through partnerships with various stakeholders.

The keynote address covered the perspective of restoring and regenerating land while generating profits, as well as collaboration among government, the private sector, academia, and international organizations. Research and demonstrations by Tottori University and JICA, along with the Midori Acceleration GX Plan, were also introduced.

EF Polymer Co., Ltd. introduced a superabsorbent polymer upcycled from crop residues and its CRAFT project in Senegal, while Sagri Co., Ltd. introduced agricultural parcel detection using satellite data and AI, soil carbon monitoring, and water management in rice paddies.

The panel discussed challenges in collaboration, expectations for the public sector, and pathways for the social implementation, dissemination, and expansion of technologies. The UNCCD Secretariat also introduced the activities of Business4Land.
