Overview
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries compiled the collection and sales status and private inventories of 2025-crop rice as of the end of May 2026, along with trends in sales volume and sales prices among rice distributors in May 2026. Nationwide collection volume was 2.671 million tonnes of brown rice, and private inventories totaled 2.23 million tonnes of brown rice. Sales volume was 88.0% year on year; sales prices were 101.0% for retail businesses and 119.6% for prepared-food, food-service, and other businesses.

Overview
Based on reports from shippers, sales businesses, organizations, and others, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries published three preliminary reports. They covered the collection and sales status of 2025-crop rice by origin, trends in private inventories, and trends in sales volume and sales prices among rice distributors.
The collection and sales status and private inventories as of the end of May 2026 are presented in tonnes of brown rice, while sales volume and sales prices are indexed year on year as trends for May 2026.
Impact
The review of rice policy beginning with 2018-crop rice aims to develop an environment in which producers, shippers, sales businesses, and organizations can produce rice in response to demand based on proactive management decisions and sales strategies. As part of this effort, information on supply and demand, prices, sales progress, and inventories related to rice distribution has been provided since March 2014.

Nationwide collection volume as of the end of May 2026 was 2.671 million tonnes of brown rice, contracted volume was 2.474 million tonnes of brown rice, and sales volume was 1.322 million tonnes of brown rice. The year-on-year changes were +254,000 tonnes, +76,000 tonnes, and -272,000 tonnes of brown rice, respectively.
The 2.23 million tonnes of brown rice in private inventories consisted of 1.65 million tonnes of brown rice at the shipping stage and 570,000 tonnes of brown rice at the sales stage. The year-on-year changes were +570,000 tonnes and +180,000 tonnes of brown rice, respectively. Sales volume was 85.0% for retail businesses and 92.0% for prepared-food, food-service, and other businesses. Sales prices were 101.0% for retail businesses and 119.6% for prepared-food, food-service, and other businesses.
