Consumption Activity Index

Personal consumption is a component that accounts for approximately half of GDP, and accurately grasping its trends as early as possible is considered important for macroeconomic assessment. From this perspective, the Bank of Japan regularly compiles and publishes the analytical data series known as the Consumption Activity Index.

The Consumption Activity Index is based on various sales and supply statistics for goods and services and is designed to capture short-term consumption activity on a monthly and quarterly basis. It consists of multiple series that can be selected according to the purpose of the analysis, rather than a single figure.

The charts and data provided are positioned as information for a broad range of users interested in financial and economic matters, covering part of the research and analysis conducted by the Bank of Japan.

The published information may be changed, revised, or discontinued without notice. Source credit is required when quoting, reprinting, or reproducing it, and consultation with the Bank of Japan's Research and Statistics Department is required for commercial reprinting or reproduction.

The published series include nominal and real values, versions with and without travel-balance adjustments, and breakdowns by form. Users can select series according to the purpose of their analysis.

The analytical data include charts and data posted on July 7, 2026, provided in PDF and XLSX formats, respectively. Seasonal-adjustment specifications as of May 2026 are also provided.

The explanatory and related materials include Bank of Japan research papers covering the compilation methods used in May 2016; expanded and revised publication content in October of the same year; adoption of 08SNA and improvements in accuracy in April 2018; revisions to estimation methods reflecting changes in consumption behavior in July 2021; and revisions accompanying the conversion of GDP statistics to the 2020 base in April 2026.
