FY Reiwa 8 SSS Awards Selected
Overview
The Maritime Bureau announced this fiscal year’s recipients of the Awards for Seafarer Safety and Labor Environment Initiatives, which recognize outstanding initiatives to improve seafarer safety and working environments. Following review by the Triple S Awards Selection Committee, four initiatives were selected: one Grand Award initiative and three Special Award initiatives. The Director-General of the Maritime Bureau will present the awards, and the award ceremony will be held on September 9, Reiwa 8, in the Director-General’s office at the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Overview
On September 1, Reiwa 8, the Maritime Bureau announced this fiscal year’s recipients of the awards program recognizing outstanding initiatives to improve seafarer safety and working environments. The review was conducted at the Triple S Awards Selection Committee meeting in August, and four initiatives were selected.
The Awards for Seafarer Safety and Labor Environment Initiatives are implemented as part of the initiatives under the 12th Basic Plan for the Prevention of Seafarer Accidents. Their abbreviation is the SSS Awards, or the Triple S Awards, formally called the Award for Safety and Smart Environment for Seafarers.

Through these awards, the Maritime Bureau promotes awareness and adoption of the winning initiatives.
Details
In the Awards for Seafarer Safety and Labor Environment Initiatives, the initiative by Toa Construction Co., Ltd., Toa Maritime Industry Co., Ltd., and Shinko Construction Co., Ltd. was selected for detecting workers falling overboard from work vessels and supporting initial rescue operations through the Wide-Area Communication-Type Assistance System for Rescuing Persons Overboard.
The Special Awards for Seafarer Safety and Labor Environment Initiatives were selected for Tatsumi Shokai Co., Ltd. and Genkai Kisen Co., Ltd.’s entry into service of the practical training vessel, the chemical tanker Shingenkai; Tsugaru Strait Ferry Co., Ltd.’s initiative using an ISM-linked near-miss information management system utilizing AI and DX to prevent seafarer accidents, strengthen safety measures, improve the working environment, digitize and make paperless the processing of near-miss information, and foster a safety culture with Safety-II in mind; and Nishimura Gumi Co., Ltd.’s initiative, “From Work Vessel to Offshore Disaster Prevention Base: Establishing a Stockpiling System to Protect Seafarers’ Lives and the Local Community.”
The award ceremony will be held in the Director-General’s office of the Maritime Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, located at 2-3-1 Kasumigaseki, Chiyoda-ku, Central Government Building No. 3, 9th floor. The Director-General of the Maritime Bureau will present the certificates, and overall media coverage and camera filming will be permitted.
