Japan-U.S. Joint Committee Agreements

The title of the published document is “About the Japan-U.S. Joint Committee Agreements.” The Ministry of Defense announced that the Japan-U.S. Joint Committee agreed on a facility development plan for the construction of a taxiway at FAC 2001 Misawa Airfield and nine other matters. The approval date for each matter was August 27, Reiwa 8.

The matters consist of agreements tailored to circumstances including the deterioration and narrowness of existing facilities, concerns about sediment runoff and flooding damage, facility development associated with realignment, construction necessary for housing development, joint exercises, and facility development plans for the Ground Self-Defense Force.

At Misawa Airfield, a severely deteriorated taxiway will be improved with concrete and asphalt paving as a complete set of works. At Yokota Airfield, the site for the aircraft parking apron will be prepared, while at Kadena Airfield, the site for the narrow and deteriorated control tower will be prepared. At Camp Zukeran, disaster prevention facilities will be developed due to concerns about sediment runoff outside the facility area and flooding damage.

At Naval Air Facility Atsugi, completed special high-voltage receiving and transforming equipment, gates, fencing, water-supply systems, sewage systems, paving, retaining structures, miscellaneous structures, and other facilities will be provided to the Government of the United States. At Camp Schwab and the Henoko Ammunition Depot, roads, water supply, and sewage systems will be developed, while a clinic and site preparation will be carried out at Camp Schwab.

In the Kisyaba District of the Okinawa Housing Integration, three family housing buildings, one guardhouse, and appurtenant facilities will be demolished. At Kanoya Airfield, part of the facilities will be used on a limited basis, while at the Asahikawa Chikabundai Training Area, some buildings will be returned and substitute buildings will be provided in accordance with Article II, Paragraph 4(b) of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement.
