Remote/Automated Sediment Control Committee to Publish Interim Report

In the mountainous and rural areas where sediment control projects are carried out, future labor shortages in the construction industry are becoming pronounced. Maintaining the construction systems and disaster response capabilities needed by these areas over the long term is a challenge, while sediment disasters are also increasing in frequency and severity.

Because of the severe construction conditions unique to sediment control, including narrow construction spaces, areas without communication coverage, and initial implementation costs, dissemination among local construction companies and deployment in ordinary sediment control projects have not progressed sufficiently.

The initiative aims to improve productivity, ensure safety, and improve the workplace environment by promoting remote and automated construction.

The initiative aims to steadily promote sediment control projects over the long term and protect people's lives, livelihoods, and means of livelihood from sediment disasters.

The basic approach is to broaden the base by establishing remote and automated construction as an everyday construction method for local construction companies. Promotion will emphasize improving labor productivity, improving safety, improving the workplace environment, conducting technological demonstrations toward implementation, and maintaining and improving disaster response capabilities.

To facilitate widespread adoption, the initiative will promote excavation and transport operations that are close to the implementation stage and common to ordinary construction and disaster response. It will also advance technology development and demonstrations adapted to the severe environments unique to sediment control.

Going forward, remote and automated construction will first be implemented during ordinary times in directly administered sediment control projects. The results will then be extended to local governments and local construction companies to improve productivity and reduce labor requirements across sediment control projects. The committee also prepared messages for clients, managers, site supervisors, and workers (operators).
