Overview
The Bank of Japan's Research and Statistics Department released the Corporate Goods Price Index (July 2026 Flash) on August 13, 2026, presenting domestic corporate goods prices, export prices, and import prices for July 2026. The domestic corporate goods price index rose 0.1% month on month and 7.2% year on year; after adjusting for summer electricity charges, the month-on-month change was 0.0%. The export price index fell 0.6% month on month on a contract-currency basis, rose 0.1% on a yen basis, and rose 18.9% year on year. Each index is shown on a basis that sets the 2020 annual average at 100, and rates of change are shown as percentages. In addition to the overall domestic corporate goods price index, the publication includes an index adjusted for summer electricity charges, which removes from the overall index the effect of the seasonal electricity surcharge applied from July through September each year. The overall index in July 2026 was 135.8, while the adjusted index was 135.6.
In July 2026, the three overall averages showed a combination in which domestic corporate goods prices rose slightly month on month, export prices declined on a contract-currency basis but rose on a yen basis, and import prices rose on both contract-currency and yen bases. Year on year, domestic corporate goods prices, export prices, and import prices all increased, with import prices recording the largest rate of increase.

The July 2026 flash domestic corporate goods price index rose 0.1% month on month and 7.2% year on year on an overall basis. After adjustment for summer electricity charges, it was 0.0% month on month and 7.2% year on year. The June flash figures were 0.5% month on month and 7.3% year on year, so the increases in July were smaller than in June both month on month and year on year. The chain-linked domestic corporate goods price index was 133.1 overall, up 0.3% month on month and 6.2% year on year; after adjustment, it was 133.0, up 0.2% month on month and 6.3% year on year.
Contributions to the month-on-month increase in domestic corporate goods prices were +0.23% from electricity, city gas, and water; +0.07% each from food and beverages and nonferrous metals; +0.05% from plastic products; +0.04% each from electrical equipment and iron and steel; +0.03% from transport equipment; and +0.02% from pulp, paper, and paper products. Major items contributing to the increase included commercial electricity, city gas, tap water, compound feed, prepared foods, wheat flour, aluminum rolled products, and copper.
Contributions to the decline in domestic corporate goods prices were -0.20% from petroleum and coal products, -0.18% from chemical products, -0.04% from agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, and -0.03% from scrap materials. Major items contributing to the decline included naphtha, jet fuel, gas oil, ethylene, propylene, xylene, milled rice, chicken eggs, chicken, copper and aluminum scrap, and iron scrap.
The overall export price index was 163.0 on a yen basis, up 0.1% month on month and 18.9% year on year. On a contract-currency basis, it rose 10.1% year on year after falling 0.6% month on month. On a contract-currency basis, month-on-month changes included declines of 0.34% in chemical products, 0.21% in other products, and 0.16% in metals and metal products, while electrical and electronic equipment rose 0.13% and general-purpose, production, and business equipment rose 0.02%, contributing to the increase.
The overall import price index was 199.7 on a yen basis, up 1.3% month on month and 29.1% year on year. On a contract-currency basis, it rose 0.3% month on month and 17.7% year on year. On a contract-currency basis, month-on-month changes included increases of 0.63% in electrical and electronic equipment and 0.02% in transport equipment, while petroleum, coal, and natural gas fell 0.18%, metals and metal products fell 0.06%, chemical products fell 0.05%, and food and beverages and agricultural and fishery products for food fell 0.02%, contributing to the decline.
Items contributing to export and import price changes included the following. For exports, the listed items included paraxylene, synthetic rubber, ethylene, Bunker C fuel oil, jet fuel and kerosene, gasoline, gold bullion, precious-metal rolled products, and iron scrap; items contributing to increases included MOS-type memory integrated circuits, video equipment and digital cameras, and switches for electronic equipment. For imports, MOS-type memory integrated circuits, wire harnesses, and transport devices contributed to increases, while naphtha, crude oil, jet fuel, silver bullion, platinum and copper scrap, high-performance resins, and chicken contributed to declines.
The exchange rate is shown as yen per U.S. dollar, and the July 2026 rate was 162.6, up 1.1% month on month. The notes state that a negative sign for the exchange rate indicates yen appreciation.
