Results of Deputy Minister Yamashita’s Visit to Mexico

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Yamashita of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries held discussions in Mexico City with Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development and others to establish an appropriate fishing quota for Pacific bluefin tuna. The participants included Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development Lopez and Chairperson Salgado of the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries.

The discussions provided an opportunity to discuss future measures based on the results presented at the joint working group of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the WCPFC Northern Subcommittee.

Japan and Mexico agreed to coordinate views with relevant countries and regions based on the proposal and cooperate in holding the joint working group at an early date.

During the discussions, the Mexican side expressed agreement on the importance of Pacific bluefin tuna resource management and stated its support for the coordination proposal among relevant countries.
