This report is a public survey report on Japan's medical device industry's future ideal form conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in FY 2024.
Japan's medical device industry is facing an important turning point amid environmental changes including the progression of super-aging society, advancement of medical technology, and proliferation of digital health. This survey conducted comprehensive examination of current situation analysis and future prospects for the domestic medical device industry.
The survey analyzed market trends for medical devices, directions of technological innovation, current state of international competitiveness, regulatory and institutional environments, and changes in industrial structure in detail. Particular focus was placed on utilization of digital technologies such as AI and IoT, response to personalized medicine, and new business models in prevention and health management fields.
Additionally, challenges for strengthening competitiveness of domestic companies were identified including expansion of R&D investment, improving response capabilities to pharmaceutical regulations, promotion of international expansion, and enhancement of human resource development.
Survey results emphasized the necessity of industrial transformation centered on digitalization and data utilization, the importance of innovation creation through industry-academia-government collaboration, and the urgency of securing competitiveness in global markets.
The survey results are expected to be utilized as important reference materials for future medical device industry policies and strategic formulation by related companies.
