This report is the completion report of a needs assessment survey for post-harvest machinery centered on circulating dryers and stone removers in the Africa region, conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
In the Africa region, improving agricultural productivity and reducing food losses are important challenges. Losses during the post-harvest processing stage of grains are particularly serious, requiring the introduction of appropriate drying and sorting technologies.
This survey conducted detailed analysis of local needs for post-harvest machinery systems centered on circulating dryers and stone removers. Through interviews with agricultural workers, agricultural cooperatives, and government agencies in target regions, the local technical level, economic situation, and infrastructure development status were verified.
The survey results showed that circulating drying technology received high evaluation from both environmental impact reduction and efficiency improvement perspectives, with particularly strong needs confirmed for low-cost, energy-saving machinery that can be introduced by small-scale farmers.
Based on these survey results, consideration of technical specifications adapted to local conditions and implementation of demonstration experiments are planned for the future.
