This report summarizes the results of a survey and analysis project on hydrogen policy formulation conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in FY 2024.
Hydrogen is expected as an important energy carrier that is key to realizing a decarbonized society, and international development competition is intensifying. For effective promotion of Japan's hydrogen strategy, continuous survey and analysis of technological trends, market trends, and policy trends is essential.
This project comprehensively conducted comparative analysis of domestic and international hydrogen-related policies, surveys of technology development trends, market forecasting, and cost analysis. The latest trends and future prospects at each stage of production, transportation/storage, and utilization were examined in detail.
Survey results confirmed that hydrogen policies are accelerating worldwide, with large-scale investment and institutional development particularly progressing in Europe, the United States, and China. Technologically, progress is being made in scaling up and cost reduction of electrolysis equipment, and practical application of new transportation and storage technologies.
For maintaining and improving the superiority of Japan's hydrogen policy, it was pointed out that strengthening international cooperation, priority investment in technology development, institutional and regulatory development, and promotion of private investment are important.
The survey results are expected to be utilized as important reference materials for future review of Japan's hydrogen strategy and formulation of specific measures.
