ALPS Treated Water Sampled Before Seawater Dilution Under IAEA Framework
Overview
At the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station site, IAEA officials, experts from analytical institutions in third countries, and Tokyo Electric Power Company collected ALPS treated water samples before seawater dilution. This was part of the additional monitoring that Japan and the IAEA agreed to implement in September 2024, and was the 11th such implementation since October 2024. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will continue working with the IAEA to provide highly transparent information and promote understanding of safety.

At the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station site, IAEA officials, experts from analytical institutions in third countries, and Tokyo Electric Power Company collected samples of ALPS treated water before seawater dilution. This implementation followed the agreement reached by Japan and the IAEA in September 2024 to conduct additional monitoring and marked the 11th round since October 2024.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry stated that it will continue to work closely with the IAEA, provide highly transparent information to the international community, and further promote understanding both in Japan and abroad of the safety of the ocean release of ALPS treated water.
Details
During this sampling, IAEA officials, experts from analytical institutions in China, South Korea, and the Swiss Confederation, and Tokyo Electric Power Company collected ALPS treated water before seawater dilution from a measurement and confirmation tank. A measurement and confirmation tank receives treated water from storage tanks and other facilities and circulates and stirs it to collect representative samples for analysis before dilution and release.
The implementation history is as follows: the 1st round was on October 15, 2024 (seawater); the 2nd round was on February 19, 2025 (seawater), February 20 (seafood selection), and February 21 (ALPS treated water before seawater dilution); the 3rd round was on April 15, 2025 (ALPS treated water after seawater dilution and before ocean release); the 4th round was on June 17, 2025 (ALPS treated water before seawater dilution); the 5th round was on September 9, 2025 (seawater) and September 10 (seafood selection); the 6th round was on December 5, 2025 (ALPS treated water after seawater dilution and before ocean release); the 7th round was on February 4, 2026 (seawater) and February 5 (seafood selection); the 8th round was on May 29, 2026 (ALPS treated water before seawater dilution); the 9th round was on June 24, 2026 (seawater) and June 25 (seafood selection); and the 10th round was on July 9, 2026 (ALPS treated water after seawater dilution and before ocean release).
