2025 Domestic Port Container Throughput (Preliminary)

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism compiled container throughput data from January through December 2025 provided by port administrators nationwide. The scope includes both laden and empty containers.

Throughput is measured in TEU, or twenty-foot equivalent units: one 20-foot container counts as 1 TEU, and one 40-foot container counts as 2 TEU.

Foreign trade container throughput increased by 1.8% year on year, while domestic trade container throughput increased by 1.9%, meaning both categories grew.

At Miike Port in Fukuoka Prefecture, a new international feeder route opened in 2025, and international feeder container throughput was newly recorded.

The breakdown consists of foreign trade container throughput, domestic trade container throughput, and international feeder container throughput. The international feeder category refers to domestic trade cargo that is transshipped at an international strategic port and then exported or imported; it has been compiled and published since 2013.

The total includes data from port administrators that provided preliminary figures, so the figures may be revised in the future. The international feeder category is a reference figure because the full amount cannot be captured.

The attached materials include a port-by-port list, a ranking of the top 20 ports by container throughput, a port-by-port list of international feeders, and changes in container throughput over time.
