Japan-Canada Foreign and Defense Officials' PM Consultations Held

These consultations are an intergovernmental dialogue in which the foreign and defense authorities of Japan and Canada address a wide range of matters, including security and defense cooperation and regional affairs. In this round of consultations, the two sides confirmed their direction of further strengthening coordination toward implementing cooperation in the security field, based on the agreement reached at the Japan-Canada leaders' meeting in March to upgrade bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and develop a Japan-Canada Comprehensive Strategic Roadmap.

The consultations were held in Ottawa, Canada. Japan was represented by Tomoki Matsuo, Deputy Director-General of the Bureau of Defense Policy at the Ministry of Defense, and Fundo Yamamoto, Minister-Counsellor of the North American Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Canada was represented by Travis Moheren, Director-General of the International Security Policy Directorate at the Department of National Defence; Eric Laporte, Acting Director-General of the International Security Policy and Strategy Directorate at the Department of Foreign Affairs; and Joya Donnelly, Director-General of the Northeast Asia Bureau at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The exchange of views covered a wide range of matters, including security and defense cooperation and regional affairs. The consultations focused on strengthening coordination toward implementing cooperation in the security field, based on the upgrade of Japan-Canada relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the development of a roadmap.
