Japan-U.S. Joint Committee Agreement

The Ministry of Defense announced that an agreement was reached at the Japan-U.S. Joint Committee on the limited use of additional property, including Japan Self-Defense Forces camps. The approval date was July 16, 2026.

Each agreement establishes a framework for the limited use of parts of the facilities for the joint exercise, as facilities and areas to which Article II, Paragraph 4(b), of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement applies.

The Asahikawa Chikabundai Training Area and Higashi-Chitose Camp, in Asahikawa and Chitose, Hokkaido, will have limited use of approximately 1,900 m² and approximately 107,000 m² of land, respectively, and one building of approximately 290 m² and four buildings totaling approximately 1,100 m², respectively. The periods are August 15 to September 15 for Asahikawa and August 10 to September 18 for Higashi-Chitose.

Asaka Camp, in Asaka, Niiza, and Wako in Saitama Prefecture and Nerima in Tokyo, will use approximately 21,000 m² of land and 10 buildings totaling approximately 12,000 m² from August 8 to September 18.

Zentsuji Camp, in Zentsuji, Kagawa Prefecture, will use approximately 3,100 m² of land and seven buildings totaling approximately 4,000 m² from August 17 to September 14.

Kengun Camp, in Kumamoto City, will use approximately 12,000 m² of land and seven buildings totaling approximately 4,600 m², while Kita-Kumamoto Camp will use approximately 4,100 m² of land and three buildings totaling approximately 5,700 m²; both will be used from August 29 to September 10. The scope includes the land and buildings of each facility, all structures comprising fixtures and installed items, and related equipment.
