MLIT Expands Eligible Devices for Support Cars 2.0

Since 2017, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has promoted the spread of Safety Support Cars equipped with advanced safety technologies, such as collision damage mitigation brakes and acceleration suppression devices that operate when the accelerator and brake pedals are mistakenly pressed, to prevent accidents involving older drivers. They are also known as Safety Support Cars, abbreviated as Support Cars.

In June 2026, the Automobile Subcommittee of the Land Transport Division of the Council for Transport Policy concluded in its report, "Future Vehicle Safety Measures Aimed at a Society Free of Traffic Accidents," that improvements and expansion of the devices covered by Support Cars should be considered in light of technological advances.

Section 2, "The Concept of Support Cars 2.0," expands the conventional covered devices to more advanced safety technologies, including driver monitoring systems, as described in the attached document, and promotes their spread as Safety Support Cars (Ver. 2.0), also known as Safety Support Cars 2.0 and abbreviated as Support Cars 2.0.

As part of "3. Future Initiatives," the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will create a new logo for Support Cars 2.0 and use it in public awareness activities. The ministry will publish details on its website once decided.
