This report summarizes the results of a survey project on equipment contributing to demand response expansion conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in FY 2024.
Demand Response (DR) is a mechanism for consumers to adjust their electricity usage to balance electricity supply and demand and stabilize the power grid. For expanding DR adoption, technological innovation and dissemination promotion of compatible equipment are essential.
This survey analyzed technological trends, market trends, and barriers to adoption for DR-compatible equipment. The implementation status and effects of DR functions in various equipment including air conditioners, water heaters, storage batteries, and electric vehicle chargers were verified.
Survey results revealed that while the technical capabilities of DR-compatible equipment have improved, high initial costs, insufficient consumer awareness, and complexity of control systems have become barriers to adoption. Additionally, ensuring interoperability between equipment and improving usability were also identified as important challenges.
For promoting adoption, proposals were made including cost reduction of equipment, promotion of standardization, enhancement of information provision to consumers, and construction of incentive systems.
The survey results are expected to be utilized as important reference materials for future DR policy formulation and development of related equipment industries.
