US supermarket giant Walmart announced on September 9 that it will open its first store in South Africa by the end of 2025. The store plans to carry a wide range of products including fresh food, daily necessities, and clothing. Growth Summit Hosting: The company held its first "Growth Summit" in South Africa in April, with suppliers from 12 African countries participating. The summit showcased products manufactured and produced in Africa, successfully leading to the adoption of African small and medium-sized enterprises as suppliers.
Management Strategy: Kath McLay, President and CEO of Walmart International, commented: "By offering abundant locally produced products and partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, we will bring 'everyday low prices' and world-class standards to the market."

Government Welcome: The South African government expressed welcome, stating: "Walmart's local procurement initiatives contribute to economic growth and job creation, which are top priorities of the government's Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP)."
Market Analysis: Local newspapers questioned differentiation from existing subsidiary mass retailer Makro, while analyzing that "consumers can benefit from intensified competition."
