According to the latest announcement from the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the results of the Service Industry Dynamic Statistics Survey published on July 24, 2025, show that service industry sales in May 2025 reached 35.1 trillion yen, a 4.7% increase from the same month of the previous year. This marks 43 consecutive months of growth in service industry sales, clearly demonstrating Japan's economic recovery trend.
By industry, accommodation and food service industries showed strong growth with an 8.2% increase from the same month of the previous year, contributed by the recovery of inbound demand and active domestic tourism. The information and communications industry also performed well with a 7.5% increase, driven by continued expansion of digital transformation (DX) related demand. Living-related services and entertainment industries increased by 6.3%, indicating progress in normalization from the COVID-19 pandemic. Transportation and postal services also showed steady growth with a 5.1% increase.
Meanwhile, the final figures for February 2025 confirmed that service industry sales were 33.8 trillion yen (4.2% increase from the same month of the previous year). This figure was slightly revised upward from the preliminary report, indicating that the recovery of service industries was stronger than initially expected. Demand expansion was particularly confirmed in professional and technical services and medical and welfare sectors.
The Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications emphasized the importance of monthly monitoring of service industry trends, which account for approximately 70% of Japan's GDP, and stated its commitment to continuing to provide highly accurate statistical information.
