SEMICON India 2025 Convening
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the US-based Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) co-hosted "SEMICON India 2025" from September 2-4, 2025, at the Yashobhoomi International Convention and Exhibition Centre (IICC) in New Delhi. The event brought together domestic and international industry and government representatives for comprehensive discussions spanning semiconductor design and manufacturing to public support systems and human resource development.
Prime Minister Modi's Strategic Announcement
At the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, "The world trusts India and is ready to build the future of semiconductors with India." He described oil as "the black gold that shaped the previous century" while calling chips "digital diamonds," outlining a government-private sector innovation and investment strategy to elevate India as a global semiconductor design and manufacturing hub.
International Participation Scale
Attendees: Approximately 21,000 participants including over 2,500 representatives from 48+ countries, with more than 350 companies exhibiting.
Country Participation: Japan ranked among the top visiting countries alongside the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea. The event featured national pavilions and dedicated areas for human resource development and startups.
Deepening Japan-India Semiconductor Cooperation
Cooperation Framework: JETRO, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII), proposed public-private partnerships positioning semiconductors as a key strategic field under the Japan-India economic security cooperation framework.
B2B Matching Implementation: During the event period, B2B matching sessions aimed at bilateral corporate collaboration were conducted, arranging a total of 62 individual meetings for Japanese companies. Participating companies reported positive outcomes, stating they "found potential partners for semiconductor manufacturing in India."
Policy Initiatives
To build a self-reliant and future-ready semiconductor ecosystem domestically, 12 memorandums of understanding were announced, with Prime Minister Modi's CEO roundtable demonstrating the government's commitment to positioning India as the "most promising semiconductor investment destination."
