This report explains an overview of a manual introducing specific examples of workplace considerations and innovations for communication in workplaces where people with disabilities work.
This idea collection is Manual No.83 published by the Japan Organization for Employment of the Elderly, Persons with Disabilities and Job Seekers in March 2025, providing specific support methods for people with disabilities facing challenges in workplace information exchange due to their disabilities. Based on hearing surveys conducted by the center, it compiles considerations and innovations implemented by employers and persons with disabilities themselves.
Workplace communication is classified into two types: "Formal Communication" (work-related exchanges) and "Informal Communication" (casual conversation including non-work content), with consideration examples organized for each. Additionally, response measures are introduced according to disability characteristics, divided into two categories: "Disability Types with Sensory Function Impairments" (hearing and visual disabilities) and "Disability Types with Cognitive Function Impairments" (intellectual, developmental, mental, and higher brain function disabilities).
For sensory function disabilities, the focus is on transmission through media and methods that can receive information, while for cognitive function disabilities, consideration for information volume adjustment and clarity of transmitted content is important. Formal communication includes regular meetings and work instruction transmission, while informal communication includes casual conversation during breaks and interaction at company events.
This idea collection aims to help not only improve organizational productivity but also create comfortable and open workplaces, and is provided in downloadable PDF format to serve as hints when aiming for workplaces where people with disabilities and their supervisors and colleagues can work together vibrantly.
The article concludes that smooth information exchange in the workplace is essential for successful employment of people with disabilities, and sharing specific consideration examples enables the construction of better work environments.
