The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism published on July 31, 2025, the final report on flood damage amounts for 2023. Nationwide flood damage totaled approximately 710 billion yen, recording the third-largest damage amount in the past 10 years from 2014 to 2023. By prefecture, Akita Prefecture recorded approximately 159 billion yen in damage, the largest since statistics began.
Major disasters included the July 2023 Baiu front heavy rain disaster (damage amount approximately 176 billion yen), the 2023 heavy rain and Typhoon No. 2 disaster (damage amount approximately 165 billion yen), and the late June 2023 heavy rain disaster (damage amount approximately 163 billion yen).
The July Baiu front heavy rain particularly caused overflow in 6 river systems and 16 rivers managed by Akita Prefecture and 2 river systems and 2 rivers managed by the national government, resulting in devastating damage including 1 death and approximately 9,500 damaged buildings. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has maintained flood damage statistics since 1961, utilized as foundational data for disaster prevention and mitigation measures.
