The Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) held an online seminar "Bangladesh at a Crossroads" on August 29, 2025, providing a multifaceted analysis of Bangladesh's political and economic situation and changing relations with India.
Current Situation in Bangladesh
Bangladesh, scheduled to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026, faces a major turning point following the collapse of the Hasina government in August 2024. Currently, an interim government has been established under Chief Advisor Yunus, and preparations for general elections are underway. The future of connectivity projects and regional economic sphere initiatives promoted under the Hasina-Modi framework has become increasingly uncertain.
Deterioration of Bangladesh-India Relations
Since the collapse of the Hasina government in August 2024, relations between Bangladesh and India have continued to deteriorate significantly. The changes in relations between the two countries, which have historically maintained close ties, could have important implications for the political and economic situation throughout the South Asian region. Particular concerns have arisen regarding the continuity of bilateral cooperation projects that had advanced under former Prime Minister Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Modi.
Impact on Bay of Bengal Connectivity Initiative
The Bay of Bengal connectivity initiative linking South and Southeast Asia also requires important reconsideration due to Bangladesh's political changes. This initiative holds strategically important significance for economic integration and development of both regions, with Bangladesh's participation and cooperation being indispensable elements. Following the change of government, new examination is needed regarding previous efforts and future challenges and prospects.
Course Structure
The course was held from 13:30 to 16:00, consisting of the latest information on Bangladesh by JETRO's Overseas Regional Strategy Director Ando Yuji, analysis of Bangladesh-India relations by IDE's Director Murayama Mayumi, examination of the Bay of Bengal connectivity initiative by Development Research Center Director Umezaki Hajime, and a panel discussion involving all instructors.
The article is evaluated as having comprehensively analyzed from a professional perspective that Bangladesh faces strategic challenges affecting the entire region, including political transition, deterioration of relations with India, and impacts on regional connectivity initiatives.
